- Most important – care about the employees and build relationships (talk to people, show interest, be genuine)
- Put the employees’ health and safety above everything else
- Make smart common sense safety policies and procedures (don’t overkill on the paperwork)
- Get the employees involved in the safety management system
- Carry oneself with integrity, character, and humility
- Build a culture of interdependence where all are working together and employees are looking out for each other
Management’s role in implementing a quality safety culture
- Be open minded and listen to the employees’ concerns and opinions
- Have knowledge of safety at an industry standard level
- Be committed to proactive safety initiatives
- Have a strong understanding of risk assessment and control and live these principals at home and work
- Management must be the push on safety leadership
Field Supervisors’ role in implementing a quality safety culture
- Look for Opportunities to Improve Workplace Safety
- Support and work with the company’s Safety Department
- Follow all company safety policies and procedures, even if you don’t agree with them (team approach to solving disagreements on existing procedures)
- Be a champion of safety and look for ways to grow and learn how to work safer, consistently and constantly
- Show initiative and independently discover unsafe conditions or situations and correct them with the cooperation of other team members and the Safety Department
- Take your positive safety attitude with you on and off the job (Positive attitudes are infectious)
Training and Communication in implementing a quality safety culture
- Proposal to conduct company-wide innovative training on employee risk awareness, assessment, and control
- Bring into the company motivational speakers to facilitate positive thinking (for all employees)
- Conduct motivational training on, “Positive Attitude Towards Safety” company-wide (training material is already developed)
- Ensure adequate number of safety meetings across company lines to ensure quality communication (meetings are designed to discuss the safety management system and ask for input and provide answers)
